To boost economic cooperation with Bulgaria

04/10/2019

The President of the Montenegrin Chamber Vlastimir Golubović and the Bulgarian Ambassador Meglena Plugtschieva-Alexandrova discussed the opportunities for intensifying economic cooperation between the two countries.

Traditionally excellent inter-state relations between Montenegro and Bulgaria should be accompanied by stronger economic activities, the interlocutors agreed. Organizing the business forum of the two countries is an excellent model to boost cooperation between the business communities, thus providing them with an opportunity to exchange ideas, experiences and opinions. The forum is proposed to be organized in the first quarter of 2020.

In 2018, Montenegro and Bulgaria exchanged goods worth EUR 17.4 million or 14.5% more than the previous year. Slightly over 11 thousand Bulgarian tourists visited Montenegro, which is an increase of 7.6 percent and they account for 33.489 overnights.

Ambassador Plugtschieva-Alexandrova pointed out that Bulgarian investors are interested in the Montenegrin energy sector, in particular in solar parks. They are also interested in increasing trade in wine, cosmetics and other goods.

President of the Montenegrin Chamber provided more information about submarine energy cable between Montenegro and Italy, which will make our country an energy hub of the Western Balkans. Better air connection would also contribute to the strengthening of the cooperation, says the President.

- I think that Bulgaria should encourage investors to open production facilities in Montenegro. Bulgaria is recognized, inter alia, in agriculture, I believe that there are real opportunities to invest in our agriculture and food industry - said Golubović.

During the meeting the interlocutors pointed to the evident shortage of skilled labour in the Balkans and the role of dual education in resolving this issue. The Ambassador offered the support to the Chamber of Economy, which is one of the pillars of dual education project in Montenegro, in terms of connecting with the Swiss experts in this field who are highly respected in the world and very active in Bulgaria, Serbia and the Northern Macedonia.
